Seasons: Planting, Harvest, and Water Protection!

Wednesday, Nov 21st, 2012

The 2012 harvest is getting close to completion, while Thanksgiving and the Holidays will soon approach. My hope for our family and yours – that we can finish the harvest before winter’s rain takes hold. At our farm in Richvale, it has rained a day each of the past two weeks – a very strong indication that winter isn’t far off. Yesterday our neighbors at the Gorrill Ranch in Nelson started flooding their fields to decompose rice straw and provide habitat for ducks and geese. This morning thousands of waterfowl were already enjoying the Gorrill’s fields. These are clear signs of the changing seasons and we cannot take for granted the importance of completing the harvest before stormy weather settles in the Valley. Every farmer will press on till the harvest is complete because a whole season’s work is at stake!

In the Sacramento Valley we understand “What’s at Stake.” Just as every farmer continues pushing until the last field or orchard is harvested, we come together in the Sacramento Valley to protect North State families, farms, communities, and the environment, by preserving the water which makes our special way of life possible. For farmers and ranchers, it is customary to work and plan according to each season and we understand the importance and change each season brings. We know this is a critical season–as Californian’s grapple with issues related to Water Supply, Delta Restoration, Salmon, Essential Habitat, and Water Infrastructure. It is always “Water Protection Season” in Northern California as all of these issues cause concern, as well as represent opportunities to improve and create a better California.

I look forward to the completion of the 2012 harvest and anticipate Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the many blessing we enjoy – especially family, neighbors, and friends. As Chairman of the Northern California Water Association (NCWA), I am thankful for accomplishments, momentum and the special relationships developed through our Association. As farmers we will likely finish the 2012 harvest before the Thanksgiving Feast; however, NCWA’s “Water Protection Season” has no end. We all know “What’s at Stake” with respect to our water resources in the Sacramento Valley. Please join us in the ongoing efforts to protect water supplies for this special region, both now and for future generations.
