Understanding Water Resources Management in the Sacramento Valley

In California’s Sacramento Valley, water resources managers are actively managing the region’s precious water resources to support the rich mosaic of inter-dependent farmlands, refuges and managed wetlands, meandering rivers that support fisheries and wildlife, and the cities and rural communities sprinkled throughout the region.

In California’s Sacramento Valley, water resources managers are actively managing the region’s precious water resources to support the rich mosaic of inter-dependent farmlands, refuges and managed wetlands, meandering rivers that support fisheries and wildlife, and the cities and rural communities sprinkled throughout the region. The overarching goal is to continually improve water management as a means of achieving regional sustainability and self-reliance with respect to water resources as called for by state legislation.

To help people better understand the Sacramento Valley and the context in which water resources managers are actively making water management decisions, we have prepared the attached info-graphic. This shows the hydrologic setting in the Sacramento Valley, which is a flow-through system, where water serves all the various inter-dependent beneficial purposes described above. Most importantly, the water resources managers in the region are continually improving their craft to serve all these purposes in an efficient manner.
