Annual Meeting 2006


On February 16, 2006 the Northern California Water Association held its 14th Annual Meeting in Yuba City, California. Speakers including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Sam Aanestad, Department of Fish and Game Director Ryan Broddrick, and renowned author and columnist Kevin Starr. The speakers addressed a variety of matters, but focused on agriculture, fish and wildlife, the theme of this year's meeting.







Governor Schwarzenegger addresses Northern California highlighting the components of his Strategic Growth Plan.


NCWA Chairman Mary Wells thanks the Governor for his leadership throughout the State of California.


A champion of Northern California water rights and flood protection, Senator Sam Aanestad spoke at the NCWA's Annual Meeting in support of the Governor's Strategic Growth Plan.


In appreciation for the Governor's attention to Northern California, Chairman Mary Wells presented the Governor a copy of President Kennedy's 1963 speech dedicating Whiskeytown Dam and Reservoir, in the hopes that he would soon be making a similar dedication in the Sacramento


Governor Schwarzenegger touted the need for infrastructre improvements, regional cooperation among water agencies, improved levee and flood control systems and reliable water supplies for all Californians.


Executive Director David Guy describes the Integrated Regional Water Management Plan for the Sacramento Valley.


In excitement of the improvements already made to fish passage and spawning grounds in Northern California, and with an optimistic look towards the future, Department of Fish and Game's Director Ryan Broddrick spoke of the need for a regional approach and looks forward to working with NCWA


Social and cultural historian Kevin Starr gave a dynamic speech on the history of water in California.


Kevin Starr spoke of the need for California to reinvent itself through water and quoted a line from John F. Kennedy's speech during the dedication of the Whiskeytown Dam and Reservoir "all of you who are here today in the State of California are here because of the wise decisions that were made by those who came before, and the wise decisions that you are making now"


Inspired by the Northern Californian's dedication to water issues, Ryan Broddrick and Kevin Starr graciously answered questions from the audience.
